How To Launch Testing Apps

Chromebook

What is a “kiosk” app?

Kiosk Apps are Chrome Apps that are designed to always run full-screen and do not allow the user to exit the app. This is great because for testing this prevents pop-ups and other apps from obstructing a students test session as well as preventing students from cheating.

Step 1 – DO NOT Login into the Chromebook

Sorry for the all caps and it might seem silly to even mention this step but in this case we’re not going to need to login to the Chromebook unless you are doing Browser-Only(Chrome or Firefox) testing. A lot of staff members will call us, “Help! I can’t find the app” or “When I launch the app it gives me an error. What should I do?” This is because state testing procedures dictate that we have to run these apps in kiosk mode and these apps are only available from the login screen. Thus they will throw errors at you if you do otherwise.

Not only that but this means less overhead for everyone. Think about if you had to reset 100 students passwords just so they could log in and take the test? What a headache! It’s easier for everyone just to launch the app directly from the login screen no credentials required.

Step 2 – Locate the Apps Drawer

Okay so you’re at the login screen and you haven’t signed into the Chromebook. Now you just need to locate the Apps Drawer in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 3 – Launch the App

Click the Apps Drawer and launch the desired app for testing. Here is a list of apps and their corresponding assessments:

Windows

Step 1 – Login into the Windows Device

Here students will just use their domain/network credentials to login into the PC.

Within the desktop folder there will be shortcut icons placed for each assessment you wish to take.

Step 3 – Launch the Program

  • Scantron: For this assessment you will start by going to performanceseries.com then select “Student Login Using LockDown Browser”

then click “Open LockDown Browser OEM”

  • CollegeBoard AP: Very similar setup to Scantron. Students will login into the platform and launch the LockDown Browser OEM.
  • NWEA Secure App Testing: Recommended for MAP Growth
  • NWEA Browser-Only Testing: Recommended MAP Skills and MAP Reading Fluency

All other Assessments double-click the shortcut icon that corresponds with the assessment you wish to take.

Browser-Only

I know we’ve briefly mentioned Browser-Only Testing but just in-case there is some confusion here are the steps to follow for doing that. This information is in here simply because some assessments recommend using the browser instead of the app. This is usually the case with practice assessments and other things.

Step 1 – Login into the Device

Here students will just use their domain/network credentials to login into the device(Preferably a Chromebook).

TIP: Once you are signed into a Chromebook there will be DCS bookmarks for each assessment already created for you in the bookmarks bar. If you are using a Windows device this will not be the case. Instead you will have to sign into the google chrome browser with a students credentials in addition to signing into Windows.

Step 2 – Go to the Testing Website(s)

Open a web browser such as Chrome(Preferred) or Firefox then type in the correct URL for the assessment you wish to take or click the assessment bookmark in DCS Bookmarks.

Congratulations! You’re finished!

There you have it, folks — that’s how to launch testing apps for either Chromebook or Windows devices. Should you have any issues please reach out to the tech department or your technology coordinator.
